The Monastery of St Anthony is one of the oldest Christian monasteries in the world, founded in the 4th century on the site where Anthony the Great, the father of Christian monasticism, lived. The monastery is active: Coptic monks live and pray here. The frescoes in the cave church date from the 4th–13th centuries. The Monastery of St Paul is 35 km further into the mountains, in an even more remote location. Both monasteries are living monuments of early Christianity, existing for 1,700 years.
