The distance from Sharm El Sheikh to Cairo is around 500 km via the Sinai Peninsula and the tunnel under the Suez Canal. The coach departs at night and arrives at Giza in the early morning - exactly when the pyramids look most impressive, in soft morning light, before the main tourist groups arrive.
The three Giza Pyramids - Khufu (Cheops), Khafre (Chephren), and Menkaure (Mykerinos) - were built between 2560 and 2510 BC. The Great Pyramid of Khufu, at 138 metres, was the tallest structure in the world for 3,800 years. It consists of 2.3 million stone blocks weighing between 2.5 and 15 tonnes each. Alongside stand three smaller queens' pyramids and several nobles' mastabas.
The Great Sphinx is a monolithic sculpture 73 metres long and 20 metres high, carved from a single limestone outcrop around 2500 BC. The face of the Sphinx is most commonly believed to represent Pharaoh Khafre. Between the paws stands the Dream Stele of Thutmose IV.
The Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square, founded in 1902, is one of the largest museums in the world. Over 120,000 exhibits cover the entire history of ancient Egypt. The centrepiece is the Tutankhamun room: the 11-kg gold death mask, three nested coffins, chariots, throne, and jewellery.
The Nile is the world's longest river (6,650 km) and the lifeblood of Egyptian civilisation. A boat trip on the Nile in Cairo is the calm finale to an action-packed day, with views of the Cairo skyline, mosques, and bridges from the water.
Passport mandatory. Wear comfortable shoes - the Giza plateau involves a lot of walking. Very hot in summer - hat and water are essential. Entry inside the Great Pyramid costs an extra $15, payable on site.
