The Coloured Canyon (Wadi Watir) is located 60 km north of Sharm El Sheikh in the Sinai mountains. The drive takes about 1.5 hours. The canyon was formed in Nubian sandstone - a rock rich in iron and manganese oxides that give the cliffs extraordinary colours: from vivid red to purple and yellow.
The route through the canyon takes about 2 hours. The path passes through narrow gaps between the rocks, sometimes requiring you to squeeze through sideways. There are occasional small climbs and descents over rocks - nothing difficult, but closed shoes are essential. The guide explains the geology of the canyon and the history of Sinai. At the end of the route - tea with the Bedouins at a small camp.
October–April is optimal. In summer the canyon is very hot (40–45°C), though the narrow walls provide shade. Early morning light (8–10 am) creates the best conditions for photography - the rocks glow in warm red and orange tones.
