Cairo and Alexandria from Sharm El Sheikh: Pyramids, Egyptian Museum, Library of Alexandria, hotel. Price $145. Wed, Sat.
Two days, two cities, five thousand years of history - the Cairo and Alexandria tour from Sharm El Sheikh is the most complete Egypt experience you can fit into a single trip. On day one you head to Cairo: the Giza Pyramids at sunrise, the Great Sphinx, and the Egyptian Museum with its staggering collection of pharaonic artefacts. Overnight in a comfortable Cairo hotel, then day two takes you north along the Mediterranean coast to Alexandria - the city founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Roman catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, the Citadel of Qaitbay, and the long Corniche seafront all wait within a single afternoon. The tour departs Wednesday and Saturday, runs on a comfortable air-conditioned coach, and includes hotel, two meals, all entrance tickets, and a professional English-speaking guide throughout.

The distance from Sharm El Sheikh to Cairo is roughly 500 km by road - about five to six hours each way. That is why this tour runs over two days with an overnight stay in Cairo, giving you a full afternoon in the capital and a full morning in Alexandria without any rushing. Departures are on Wednesday and Saturday, and the group size is kept small so the guide can give proper attention to every traveller.
The coach leaves Sharm El Sheikh late at night, arriving in Giza in the early morning. The Pyramids of Giza - Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure - are the only surviving wonder of the ancient world, and seeing them at first light before the crowds arrive is genuinely moving. The Great Sphinx crouches nearby, carved from a single limestone outcrop around 2500 BC. After the plateau you move to the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, home to over 120,000 objects including the solid-gold death mask of Tutankhamun. Lunch is included, then the afternoon is free to explore Khan el-Khalili bazaar or rest at the hotel before dinner.
Alexandria sits 220 km north-west of Cairo on the Mediterranean coast. The modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina, opened in 2002, stands on the site of the ancient Library of Alexandria - once the greatest repository of knowledge in the ancient world. The catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa are the largest Roman burial site in Egypt, a three-level underground necropolis blending Greek, Roman, and Egyptian art. The Citadel of Qaitbay was built in 1477 on the exact site of the ancient Pharos lighthouse, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. The Corniche promenade stretches along the sea for 26 km - a perfect place for a final coffee before the drive back to Sharm.
Bring comfortable walking shoes - both the Giza plateau and the Alexandria catacombs involve significant walking. The overnight hotel in Cairo is a clean, centrally located three-star property; if you prefer an upgrade, ask when booking. The tour price of $145 per person covers everything listed in the inclusions; the only extras are lunch on day two and personal shopping. Children travel at the same price because entrance fees and hotel costs are the same regardless of age.
